Players Leadership Group

The Players Leadership Group (formed in 2009) has made considerable inroads to the training non-attendance issue and a good number of players have trained regularly during the season. This group has shown great commitment and a structure that will continue to build and develop during future seasons.
The structure of the Leadership Model is set up as four teams amongst the playing group, each with a team leader. Each leader then has the responsibility to ensure their team members are aware of each different training module, session times and to ensure regular attendance. Teams will also be set allocated tasks throughout the season to make sure that, along with the committee members and volunteers, there are enough helpers to ensure the club runs smoothly. These duties will include setting and packing up of all equipment required for home games, working the club BBQ for home matches, selling raffle tickets, supplying fruit for half time and general help around the club as required.

The current Leadership Group has worked really hard to change the culture of the playing group and build a real sense of wanting to be part of something special. This has helped to develop a competitive edge that was demonstrated when the players made the finals in each division.

To continue the success of the last three years, the group will once again set up a points system amongst the teams with points awarded for various reasons including:

  • attendance at training
  • allocated duties around the club successfully completed
  • team victories within the training structure
  • social events

In order to promote and maintain a competitive spirit, each team will be given a team colour. Training shirts in their respective team colours will be given to each member to be worn at all training sessions.

The Players Leadership Group believes that, given the success of this program in 2009, it has achieved its main objectives of building team spirit, increasing playing successes and following our mission statement:

“To continue to develop the club through its junior and senior players by providing opportunities and skills to enjoy the game of rugby. We strive to foster and create a club atmosphere where all are welcome by promoting high ethical standards both on and off the field”

Gym Facilities

As part of the rebuild, Woodville planned to have gym facilities included which will be part of every Woodville Senior players Full Season membership.  The gym will have 24/7 access (outside of previous bookings for specific training sessions)
We hope to have the equipment installed by early March (if not earlier), and will notify members when available for use.
Scrum Machine

There’s a bit of good news for the less svelte players amongst us. The club was successful in its grant application with the Department of Sport and Recreation and has received a grant for $6000 towards the purchase of a new scrum machine. The new machine gives complimentary shoulder massages and sings your favourite songs to you while you push the sled to make the whole experience that much more enjoyable. Well maybe not, but the sled is made by Enforcer, and this model, the “Heavy Duty Sled”, was specifically developed for the Wallabies for their new training oval in Coffs Harbour. This model is also currently used by the Brumbies and the Waratahs in the Super 15. Happy scrummaging, everyone!

New Lights

In the Woodville spirit of providing the best in facilities for both players and spectators, the Woodville Rugby Club has installed brand new ground lighting over the field. The new lights are a significant improvement on the old, and will enable eventual night matches to be played at the venue.

To fund the project, the club was granted funds from SA Sport and Rec, which will account for 50% of total costs towards the lighting. A further 41% is expected to be granted to the club by Charles Sturt Council.

Our grateful thanks go to the following:

  • SA Sport & Recreation
  • Charles Sturt Council
  • SA Rugby Union
  • Paul Caica MP for Colton
